WEST MARIN PHARMACY CHANGES HANDS
Date: 12-Apr-2007
Author: Paul Liberatore
The only pharmacy in West Marin is back in business.

After being closed for four days, West Marin Pharmacy in Point Reyes Station re-opened last Friday and is finishing its first full week under new owners Zsuzsanna Biran and her husband, Jason Yoon.

"We want to thank everyone for bearing with us during the transition," Biran said. "It's so exciting. I can't sleep. It's like having a baby. People are so supportive. They're thankful that we're back open."

Biran, 53, a native of Hungary, takes over the business from the family of the former pharmacist, Dan Donovan, who died last year.

Last October, the Donovan family was having trouble finding a new owner and was considering closing the business, which would have left West Marin without a pharmacy.

"Then Jason and I surfaced on the horizon," she said with a chuckle.

"That pharmacy is very important," said Dave Sexton, manager of the West Marin Health and Human Services Center. "It would have been very difficult for people if they had to go over the hill to fill their prescriptions or learn to get them by mail. Oh, boy, we're glad it's open."

Biran, a licensed pharmacist, had been working in the pharmacy since October, keeping it open while she learned the ropes and got to know the local clientele.

She took ownership last Friday when escrow closed.

"It was supposed to be seamless, but it was pretty close," she said.

Biran, who dabbled in acting for a year, moved with her husband from the Hollywood Hills to Inverness Park.

"It was a big change," she said. "But the community here has been so great."

They plan on gradually turning the pharmacy into a combination of holistic and conventional medicine similar to Elephant Pharmacy and Pharmaca. Yoon is available to offer energy healing, she said.

West Marin Pharmacy is at Fourth and A streets, Point Reyes Station. It is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The pharmacy counter opens at 10 a.m.
