WALGREEN POSTS HIGHER MAY SALES; SAME-STORE SALES RISE 6.4%

Monday morning, drug store operator Walgreen Co. (WAG) said sales for the month of May increased 10.7% to $4.58 billion from $4.14 billion for the same month in the previous year. The company said May sales in stores opened for at least a year rose 6.4%.
The Deerfield, Illinois-based company said May pharmacy sales grew 11.1%, while comparable pharmacy sales climbed 7.2%. Total prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased 5%. Pharmacy sales accounted for 65.7% of total sales for the month. Comparable store front-end sales increased 5.0% during May.
Walgreen said calendar shifts accounted for a negative impact of 0.3 percentage points on comparable pharmacy sales. May 2007 had one fewer Monday and one additional Thursday compared to the previous year.
The company said calendar year-to-date sales surged 13.3% to $22.51 billion from $19.86 billion in 2006. Sales for the nine months were $40.34 billion, up 14.5 % from $35.24 billion. Same store sales for the fiscal year to date grew 8.8 %.
At May 31, Walgreen said it operated 5,751 drugstores in 48 states and Puerto Rico, compared to 5,251 a year ago. WAG is currently down $0.01 and trades at $45.12.
