TALYST NAMES GARY JOHNSON, PHARM D, MHA AS VICE PRESIDENT OF PHARMACY PRACTICE SOLUTIONS
Date: 26-Apr-2007
Bellevue, Wash. - Talyst, a leader in pharmacy automation, has named Gary Johnson, Pharm D, MHA , to the position of Vice President of Pharmacy Practice Solutions. In this role, Dr. Johnson, as a member of the executive team, will serve as the firm's senior pharmacist, working as chief liaison to the pharmacy community, including professional organizations and regulatory groups. In addition, he will serve as senior consultant for the company's product management and best practices groups.

Since 2002, Dr. Johnson has been Corporate Director of Pharmacy Services at Parkview Health System, a six-hospital system based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In that capacity, he restructured pharmacy services, centralizing operations so that all facilities would benefit from the accuracy and inventory advantages of barcoded medications. A Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee for the six hospitals facilitated creation of a single formulary, which enabled centralized automation, including: barcode labeling, packaging technology, carousel storage and retrieval, automated dispensing units and outpatient prescription processing. This centralized automation supported the implementation of barcoded medication verification and an electronic medication administration record.

"Gary is one of the few pharmacy directors who have created processes to deal with two of the largest trends in healthcare delivery today: multi-hospital delivery systems and medication inventory management," explained James E. Torina, chairman and chief executive officer of Talyst. "We appreciate that he has chosen Talyst as a platform to continue his outreach work with pharmacists who are instituting safety and efficiency improvements."

Dr. Johnson will represent Talyst at professional forums, as well as supervise acute-care product specialists and represent the pharmacy-management perspective in product development.

"Multi-hospital facilities add an additional layer of complexity," Dr. Johnson says, "particularly when implementing a single formulary across multiple locations. That is an environment where Talyst's modular approach to dose packaging, barcoding and inventory offers particular advantages.

"We recognize that every health system and every hospital has distinctive needs and priorities. Above all, we are committed to assisting hospital pharmacy directors and their teams to tailor automation solutions and related work processes."

While serving at Parkview, Dr. Johnson completed a CEO mentorship and earned his accreditation in hospital administration from the American College of Healthcare Executives. His initiatives to institute system-wide medication barcoding and centralized packaging at Parkview produced significant cost reductions and efficiency gains, while improving response time and other service measures.

He previously served at the University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kansas, as Assistant Director of Pharmacy, Director of Clinical Laboratories and Director of Performance Improvement. Prior to that, at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, he completed an accredited residency in Pharmacy Administration from the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. He held previous resident and intern positions at Charleston Area Medical Centers, Charleston, West Virginia, and Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.

Dr. Johnson received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy in Atlanta. His Master of Science in Health Care Policy and Administration is from the Mercer University Stetson School of Business and Economics, also in Atlanta. He has served as Adjunct Professor at both Purdue University School of Pharmacy and the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy.

He is a member of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists, the American College of Health Care Executives, as well as multiple state associations.
