PHARMACY CHAIN HAS EYES ON MODESTO

Pharmacy retail chain CVS/pharmacy has plans for two stores in Modesto, with the first to open next summer in the former Krispy Kreme doughnut outlet near Orangeburg and Briggsmore avenues.

That building is 13,225 square feet and sits near the southeast corner of the intersection in the Sills Plaza shopping center.

A CVS spokesman said work would soon begin on transforming the doughnut shop, which closed in 2005, into a pharmacy. A sign outside that building says a CVS outlet is coming soon.

CVS spokesman Michael DeAngelis said the store would be a full-service pharmacy. A company Web site states that CVS, based in Rhode Island, is the largest pharmacy chain in the United States, with about 6,200 stores in 38 states.

CVS also has signed a lease for a second Modesto store at the intersection of Briggsmore and McHenry avenues. DeAngelis said there is no confirmed date for that store to open.

It's unclear which corner the store would be on, with a shopping center anchored by Safeway on the northwest corner, and a Jack-in-the-Box outlet on the northeast corner.

The southeast corner is occupied by McHenry Village and Mallard's restaurant, while the southwest corner is an empty lot that was the former home of Foster Farms Dairy's plant and offices.

After moving to Kansas Avenue, Foster Farms sold the site to a development group. It was slated for development as a retail center. The current owners couldn't be reached for comment about the property.

CVS also is planning a store in Atwater.

Sills Plaza owner Peter Sills said CVS is a good tenant for the 11-acre center, which opened in 1965.

"We always wanted a pharmacy if we could get one," Sills said. "We feel it fits our tenant mix, and it fits in nicely with the FoodMaxx nearby."

A new strip mall, Cornerstone Plaza, opened nearby this summer on what was the site of a roller skating rink.
