MAN LEADS POLICE ON 120 MPH CHASE AFTER PHARMACY THEFT
Date: 25-May-2007
LAPEL, Ind. (AP) - A man accused of stealing 2,500 pain pills from a pharmacy led officers on a chase at speeds of up to 120 mph before he was arrested, police said.
Steven R. Wren, 30, of Indianapolis, faces preliminary felony charges of burglary, theft, resisting law enforcement and reckless driving.
Police were responding to an alarm at a CVS pharmacy in Lapel, about 20 miles northeast of Indianapolis, early Wednesday when officers spotted a car going 90 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Madison County Sheriff's deputies and Lapel police chased the vehicle onto Interstate 69 and into Hamilton County, where speeds reached 120 mph.
The car stopped along the highway and a passenger ran from the vehicle and has not been caught, police said. Police arrested Wren, who was driving.
Police discovered about 2,500 hydrocodone pills in 18 bottles inside a trash bag in the back seat. They also found a sledgehammer, possibly used to smash in a window at CVS, bolt cutters, a flashlight, black clothing and a pair of black masks in the vehicle, according to court documents.
Wren was being held in the Madison County Jail on $20,000 bond. He made an initial court appearance Wednesday, but the Madison County Prosecutor's Office asked for a 72-hour extension to file formal charges.
