JOHNSTON FAMILY PHARMACY TURNS 25
Date: 15-Nov-2007
Author: Joanne Boeckman
Milestones should be celebrated, and Steve and Debra Straw are not about to miss the opportunity to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their Sun Pharmacy in Johnston.
In honor of the occasion, the Straws have planned an open house at the shop on Friday and Saturday.
The pharmacy was originally called Sun Drug and it was located in Village Square Mall from 1982 until 1998, when the Straws built a free-standing building. That year, the pharmacy moved into that building at 6105 Merle Hay Road in Johnston and its name was changed to Sun Pharmacy.
It shares the building with Sarah's Hallmark shop, which the Straws created and added on to the pharmacy in 1993.
With the end of its first quarter century, the pharmacy's name is changing once again. The new name - Sun Health Mart Pharmacy - reflects its affiliation with Health Mart Pharmacies.
In 25 years, both the pharmacy and Johnston have grown. When the pharmacy was founded in 1982, it had 6,000 square feet, Johnston had a population of 2,300 and Merle Hay Road was two lanes.
Today, the store has 10,000 square feet, Johnston's population is moving toward 15,000, and Merle Hay Road is a multi-lane street.
