HASTINGS ENOUGH TO MAKE ANYONE DEPRESSED?
Date: 13-Dec-2007
Author: Richard Morris
It seems people in Hastings are in desperate need of cheering up.
According to recent figures the local NHS forks out £6.71 per person on anti-depressants making Hastings appear the joint eighth most depressed town in the UK.
Middlesbrough tops the list spending E7.58 per person but Hastings is the only town or city south of London to feature in the top ten making it the region's saddest town by a distance.
In fact, nine of the tenhappiest towns are from the south.
So why are people in Hastings so glum?
Could it be the fiasco surrounding Hastings Pier? Perhaps the twin bin scheme has pushed people over the edge of maybe it is the prospect of losing vital services at the Conquest Hospital.
Maybe it is Hastings United's recent slump, the terrible weather of the last few months and almost total lack of Summer or the planned increase in parking prices.
There is another possibility though.
The local NHS also spent E1.64 per person on propecia last year - the second highest figure of anywhere in the UK - so maybe the real reason everyone is so down is a little more personal.
